Lavender – Lavandula angustifolia
This is one of the most famous essential oils for its extensive reach into multiple product lines, applications, and known benefits of calming and easing the mind and body into a restful state for ease of sleep.* However, lavender has many more benefits to be unlocked when used correctly, and can also be harmful if not used appropriately due to its passive strength.
Preparing Lavender Essential Oil – For topical and aromatherapy use
Wicks Studio offers a concentrated formula of lavender in a half-ounce bottle. Because of the strength of this formula, we recommend diluting the essential oil using a carrier oil, such as coconut oil. Never use essential oils in their “neat” or undiluted form.* This may cause permanent sensitivity, resulting in an allergic reaction every time you come in contact with the plant or its by-products. Some aromatherapists may have different opinions or recommendations on the dilution rate of essential oils to carrier oils, but we recommend a 1-2% dilution rate. This means you should add no more than 6-12 drops of essential oil to each fluid ounce of carrier oil, depending on the intensity of the application you want to achieve with the essential oil. Lavender can burn the skin if not diluted properly.
Depending on the rate of dilution, you will find Wicks Studio’s Half Ounce Bottle will go a long way. Each bottle contains about 300 drops with an easy-to-use dropper for consistent measuring.
As for Aromatherapy use, you can prepare Lavender for a spray bottle to use on sheets. Simply shake a few drops with water in a small spray bottle. Make sure to let the sheets dry before laying in them, so as to let the scent permeate the linens for a longer scent presence. You can purchase a pre-blended formula from Wicks Studio, ready to use in a spray bottle.
For use in an oil diffuser, follow your manufacturer’s instructions. Some require diffusing with water, and others simply have a heat plate where you drop the oil for diffusing in a ventilated room. You do want to keep track of how many times you turn on your oil warmer or how long it has been running, so you can replace the oil regularly for optimum benefits. You don’t need to worry so much about diluting the essential oils here. However, Wicks Studio offers a pre-blended fragrance oil, which is offered at a lower price point and made specifically for aromatherapy use.
When diluted correctly, Lavender can be used to help with infections and skin wounds, allergic reactions, and alleviating skin burn stings.
